["XWindow"] > Desktop environnement
----
In graphical computing, a desktop environment (DE) offers graphical user interface (["GUI"]) solution to operate a computer. The name is derived from the desktop metaphor used by most of these interfaces.

A DE provides icons, folders, toolbars, applications, applets, wallpapers, abilities like drag and drop and much more. As a whole, the particularities of design and function of a desktop environment endow it with a distinctive look and feel.

On systems running the ["X Window System"] (typically Unix-like systems, including Linux), the desktop environment is flexible. The X-Window-System creates the graphical display, the window manager display the windows on your desktop, and the desktop environments put the window manager and other components all together into one fully featured desktop (a set of themes, and programs and libraries for managing the desktop). This may seem strange coming from a Windows, Mac OS or OS/2 background - since each provide one set of programs and no choice about what components you want.

The three predominant desktop environments and installation in Debian:

 * GNOME - see ["DebianGnome"]
  * Common standard desktop for UNIX (replacing CDE). Functional, usable, but not lightweight.
  * http://www.gnome.org
  * Provided by the gnome-desktop-environment and gnome packages
  * Uses the Metacity Window Manager by default, but can use many compatible window managers
 * XFCE - see ["DebianXFCE"]
  * Lightweight ["GTK"] (like GNOME) desktop system. Originally a GTK clone of CDE.
  * http://www.xfce.org
  * Provided by the xfce4 package (or just pick and mix the components)
  * Defaults to the xfwm4 window manager
 * KDE - see ["DebianKDE"]
  * Not-lightweight fully-featured desktop environment. Very Popular, although not as usable or as refined as GNOME / XFCE.
  * http://www.kde.org
  * Provided by the kde package
  * Uses the KDE Window Manager
