Mini-DebConf in Taiwan

The "Software Liberty Association of Taiwan"(SLAT) is featuring a mini-DebConf during ICOS 2009 – International Conference on Open Source in Taipei in September, 2009. The ICOS 2009 programme is available.

Taiwan is a beautiful country with a strong IT industry. We just have two DDs in Taiwan since DebConf9 and at least 4 other DDs will come from other countries during ICOS, so it is a great opportunity to have a mini-DebConf in Taiwan.

Please join us in Taipei on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th of September, 2009. Participants may get accommodation and food sponsorship. Remember to add your name to this wiki page below if you are joining us. Please also send a separate email with your information to apply for sponsorship to Local contact.

Hi everybody, it's me, DanJacobson = jidanni, the Google/Taipei 101 trip organizer.

Someone asked me

Q: Do you really want to bring our guests to visit Google or just 101?

A: Look, there they (Google) are, waiting in front of their building to greet you. Press the ^ arrow on the circular control a few times to tilt to see the top of the (world's tallest) building.

My whole feeling is I want to show our guests high technology things (hence if there is a time conflict, I'd be willing to forfeit the museum trip... indeed, one leisurely item is enough for one day, especially when in the afternoon must go to the airport), and Google is very high technology for me (even though I think their company is sneaky), they having just introduced ?StreetView for Taipei in Google Maps (the above link), etc. And a rare look inside Google would be very special, at least from my point of view (maybe others rub elbows with them all the time so they are nothing special.)

OK, so if we are to visit Google, on the 80th floor, well, how could our guests explain to their grandkids that they only got to the 80th floor of the worlds tallest building? Nor how could we ask our guests to pay the top floor admission fees? So that will all be taken care of (by our sponsors, of course, or perhaps our Google tourguide (??) will lead us straight past the Fee Booth, or whatever they have there, avoiding the NT$350/person fee. Or maybe I'm dreaming.)

Regarding Non Disclosure Agreements. Perhaps we can tell Google that it is very bad manners to ask for such, or perhaps I can sign one big one for everybody. On the other hand before one uses the Google Search engine one better agree to the terms. Anyway, tell Google that I am vegan if they'll be treating us to lunch... or maybe I'm dreaming again from my last RMS hosting experience.

Anyway, as soon as I am given the name of our Google contact person I will get on the phone with him from my 04-25854780 telephone number, to work out the details.

My ideal trip would be to arrive at Google at their earliest morning time slot, later have lunch with them, and as a grand finale, we go to the top floor. By that time it would already be the afternoon, and we would stroll over to the Hyatt hotel and wait with our friends until their airport bus arrives, and bid them adieu. Whereupon we remaining members would stroll around the many other attractions like the next door World Trade Center, etc. I'm sure one can find them all by just zooming back out there in the above Google map...

Or, living all day here in the (too far away for a day trip) Taiwan country side maybe I have grown insensitive to others needs to see the countryside instead on new shiny chrome tall steel things with high-tech companies inside them. Anyway, I'll be happy to be tourguide/translator for any itinerary the group chooses. 我全程任何旅程均能配同兼翻譯。

(P.S., excuse my lousy formatting. I am only a MediaWiki expert.)

(As this event might come right before some people's departure, note that there are frequent buses to the airport from the Hyatt Hotel right across from Taipei 101. 至桃園國際機場客運自101大樓斜對面之君悅飯店 可乘大有巴士。)
