Potato is the code name for a former Stable Debian distribution. It was released on August 15th 2000 as Debian GNU/Linux 2.2. It was superseded by Debian/Woody on 19 Jul 2002.
Security updates aren't provided anymore.

15 Aug 2000 : Initial released : 2.2r0 (press release).
14 Nov 2000 : Updated (2.2r1) (press release).
05 Dec 2000 : Updated (2.2r2) (press release).
17 Apr 2001 : Updated (2.2r3) (preparation, press release).
05 Nov 2001 : Updated (2.2r4) (preparation, press release).
10 Jan 2002 : Updated (2.2r5) (preparation, press release).
03 Apr 2002 : Updated (2.2r6) (preparation, press release).
13 Jul 2002 : Updated (2.2r7) (preparation, press release).
19 Jul 2002 : Debian/Potato becomes old-stable. (i.e A new stable is released : Woody).
24 Apr 2002 : Announcement of the end of security Update (DWN).
30 Jun 2003 : End of security updates (i.e End of life.). The distribution is moved to archive.
