There are many Debianistas in New York City. If you are interested in Debian or Free Software, get in touch with us.

  • IRC channel: #debian-nyc on irc.debian.org (OFTC)

  • Mailing list

  • We often have meetups at Pacific Standard in Brooklyn. For details, check the mailing list.

DebConf10

The Debian-NYC team was successful in getting the bid for DebConf10, in 2010, for New York City. Our planning is occurring via the DebConf wiki. We are eager for volunteers of all types, whether Debian-affiliated already or not. See the DebConf wiki page for details. There is a separate (but heavily overlapping) DebConf10 mailing list and IRC channel.

Debian Workshops

In order to build a community, we occasionally hold workshops for the NYC area. They vary from things for total beginners, to users of Debian, to advanced topics. Check /Workshops below for information, or /Workshops/WhatsInAPackage for the upcoming workshop.

Novice Nights

Novice Nights are a night where we explicitely invite newcomers to get help installing, configuring, or learning about Debian. See DebianNYC/NoviceNights for more information.

Visiting NYC

As part of our plan to take over the world, we encourage visitors to come by so that we can share knowledge, stories, and fun. If you'll be around the area, let us know by mail or IRC (above). We can arrange social events or keysignings while you are here.

Travel / Accommodations

There is a lot of information on our DebConf10 wiki page or our bid page. Also, just ask us via IRC.

Hostels/Hotels:

Airports:

  • LGA most convenient for domestic flights. Walk outside the terminal (arrival/baggage claim level), follow the signs to "public buses" (only visible outside). You will come to the MTA bus stop. You want the M60 bus to get to Columbia/Morningside heights area, but other buses connect to subways in Queens. You need to buy a metrocard before you get on: go inside the terminal to the metrocard vending machine there (or, they accept exact change in quarters).
  • JFK and EWR (Newark) are about equally convenient for getting to the city, but from JFK can be cheaper if you take a longer route to the city.
