Goals supported by DebianNonProfit

Manage the association economical balance

You can try running GNU Cash. We suggest to go through the tutorial to learn it before using it.

Merge text and images to create flyers and booklets

  • You can use ?AbiWord or OpenOffice.org Writer to edit the text contents, but don't spend time doing layout.

  • You can use OpenOffice.org Draw to create drawings.

  • You can use The Gimp to cut and fix your pictures.
  • When you have everything ready, you can use Scribus to lay everything out in pages.
  • To send the results to the printing service, you can export your work in PDF format and take the resulting PDF file to them: most printing services will happily accept PDF files.
    • Note: it is advised not to rely too much on the exact shades of colors to be printed as you see them: unfortunately, monitors and paper show colors differently

Goals not yet fully supported by DebianNonProfit

Writing a request for fundings

You can use OpenOffice.org Writer to write the letter: it also supports creating template letters to ease repetitive tasks.

Missing or not yet identified: address directory

Writing a letter to the members to organize a fundraising party

  • Software: OpenOffice.org Writer

  • We lack:
    • a free clipart archive
    • membership management with label printing
    • interface between OpenOffice.org and membership management to put the names in the letter

Goals are not tasks, nor tools (some insight on goals, tasks and tools)

(please add other goals. Don't confuse goals with tools or tasks: "Word processing" is a task you do with a tool, not a goal: "Writing a letter to the members to organize a fundraising party" is a goal)

(we should elaborate more on the goals, possibly also providing links for goal-specific tutorials and other resources)

Example of tools and not goals:

  • Manage E-Mail
    • Software: Evolution
    • Software: Mutt(console)
  • Browse the Web
    • Software: Mozilla-Firebird
  • Manage Web-site
  • Develope great Software Projects
  • edit and check xml files(working with bigger ones)
  • check hardware for errors
  • creating macromedia flash
  • emulate/run windows under linux

Even if they are not goals, many, many thanks to contributors! Whoever added these, you must have had some goal in your mind. Please ask yourself:

  • Why would a non-profit association really want to create Macromedia Flash?
  • Why would a non-profit association really want to emulate Windows under Linux?
  • Why would a non-profit association really want to check hardware for errors?
  • Why would a non-profit association really want to edit and check XML files, especially bigger ones?

The answers to these questions are good candidates to be goals. (Enrico)

Further insight can be found in the book "The Inmates are Running the Asylum", by A. Cooper, SAMS Publishing. Borrow it in your local library: it's a must-read! Goals are covered in chapter 10.
