Introduction

Not all contributors to Debian are project members; in fact, many contributors to translations, website maintenance etc. do so without ever being formally associated with Debian.

Debian has several types of association and membership for those who do wish to be recognised, or have rights within the project.

Everybody who contributes to Debian is automatically a Debian Contributor.

Whilst everybody who maintains packages is a package maintainer, a DebianMaintainer is a more formal recognition of that status and allows contributors to make limited uploads to the archive on their own.

Pathways

Usually, Debian contributors become more formally associated with the project via a defined pathway. Uploading developers are generally expected to have been a DebianMaintainer for at least six months prior to application.

Changing Status

The new members administration website is used to co-ordinate applications from across Debian. Contributors can log in with an Alioth account and request a new status, and if approved it will be granted. This process can take anything from a few days to several weeks.
