Title: Release Candidate 1 of Debian Installer

The Debian Installer [http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/Team team] is pleased to announce the first release candidate of the installer for Debian GNU/Linux Lenny.

Improvements in this release of the installer

  • Improved support for Live-CD installation medias (much faster and reliable then earlier releases).
  • Support for some NAS devices based on Marvell's ARM-compatible Orion chip:
    • QNAP TS-109/TS-209 and TS-409
    • HP Media Vault mv2120
    • Buffalo Kurobox Pro
  • Installer images for Netwinder have been added again.
  • Installer images for i386 Xen guests have been added, see [http://wiki.debian.org/Xen#InstallLenny]

Behavioural changes in this release

  • arm: when a static IP address is set in the original system that is the default from the vendor, this address will now be used. In the past, the installer would use DHCP in this case but users found this confusing. This affects the Linksys NSLU2 and Thecus N2100.

Known issues in this release

  • As a result of a recent switch to Perl 5.10, the installation logs will show some Perl warnings. As far as we know these are harmless and can be ignored.
  • Installations in Russian (and possibly some other languages) may fail due to an error from aptitude; most languages seem unaffected.
  • i386: for this release installation from floppy disk is not supported.
  • i386/amd64:GRUB installation on cpqarray RAID volumes (/dev/ida/cXdX) may fail.
  • There are still a few issues for some PowerPC subarchitectures.
  • Known issues for the graphical installer:
    • some non-US keymaps are not fully supported (deadkeys and combining characters do not work);
    • keys for accented or special characters may not work correctly; this is a regression compared to previous releases which will hopefully be fixed again soon;
    • touchpads should work, but support may not be optimal; if you experience problems, you should use an external mouse instead;
    • should work on almost all PowerPC systems that have an ATI graphics card, but is unlikely to work on other PowerPC systems.

See the [http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/errata errata] for details and a full list of known issues.

We do need your help to find bugs and further improve the installer, so please try it. Installer CDs, other media and everything you else you will need are available at our [http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer web site].

Our thanks to everybody who has contributed to this release.
