Debian Installer

Processing Installation Reports

If you don't feel confident to fix bugs, there is still plenty to do in helping sort through the installation reports. The volume of Installation Reports is large, so don't be shy about helping out. This will save the d-i developers' time.

The main tasks are (roughly in order of skill required):

  • asking the submitter for more information, usually:
    • exact d-i version used (i.e., download URL and download date)
    • output of lspci -v and lspci -n (especially in case of hardware detection problems)
    • /var/log/syslog & /var/log/messages (occasionally needed)

    • ask submitter to try again with recent daily image (if they tried an installer more than a few weeks old)
  • try to reproduce the bug, if you have the same hardware
  • reassign bugs against "metapackages" or non-existent packages to real package names
  • retitle bug reports so they can be scanned more easily (http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2004/07/msg00573.html)

  • confirm the bug's severity level is appropriate (http://www.debian.org/Bugs/Developer#severities)

  • cloning installation reports, when they report more than one problem
  • identify installation reports that report the same problem
