Meeting held on Saturday June 24th 16:00 UTC ([http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2006/06/msg01170.html announcement]).
Meeting topics (expected duration 60 minutes?):
- Status reports
[http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2006/06/msg00893.html Partman crypto] - 10 mins
[http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2006/06/msg00902.html Graphical installer] - 10 mins
- Beta 3 release
Overview: ?DebianInstaller/EtchBeta3Prep
- Preparations have started with announcement to translators and porters
- Main blocker is that we need 2.6.16 in testing - 10 mins
- Massive coordinated migration of udebs needed: most interdepend - 5 mins
- Some changes in debian-cd needed after migration - 5 mins
- Ports need testing! - 5 mins
- Questions:
- Known issues not listed on overview page? - 5 mins
ppc64 cross||native installer - 5 mins
Andreas Jochens has requested to support the ppc64 port in d-i. This was also [http://people.debian.org/~bubulle/d-i/irc-meeting-20060429/minutes discussed] during the last meeting and then the patches submitted at that time were rejected as there was no complete overview of needed changes to support the port.
This overview is [http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2006/06/msg00910.html now available] and most of the changes are fairly trivial. However, there is a lot of resistence against this port, both from the powerpc community and from release managers.
- So, do we want to support the port or not?
- Of the proposed changes, most invasive (and needing future maintenance) are for kernel udebs, base-installer (kernel selection) and debian-installer
- Arguments in favor
- Most changes are trivial and do not hinder d-i team
- Andreas has been very open and proactive in this request and looks likely to remain that way
- Arguments against
- Port has very little support
- Theoretical alternative of cross-install support in d-i (use 32-bit installer to install 64-bit system); Andreas sees this as an additional feature, not a replacement for a native installer
- Proposed conditions
- d-i team will not maintain ppc64 data
- ppc64 will not be allowed to interfere with release plans (i.e. any needed changes have to be submitted in time)
- in principle no separate uploads for ppc64 changes
- to be removed if not maintained
- Post-Beta3 development - 15 mins
- Removal of 2.4 kernel support
- Persistent device naming
- Supplemental repository support for udebs
- Graphical installer
- library upgrade
- all fonts must be udebs; automatic font switching on language selection
- cleaning up and debugging
- check what is really supported and what not (mainly powerpc)
