Debian GNU/Linux is the preferred distribution for many users in the public sector, in government, and in administration. This page exists to

  • collect the main benefits of using Debian GNU/Linux for governmental use.
  • list known users in the public sector.
  • promote the use of Debian GNU/Linux in the administration.

Benefits

  • independence of any nation - e.g. for obvious reasons, Kim Jong-il won't run an US-MS-OS on his game PC and George W. Bush might shrink away from using a French distribution on his laptop.
  • independence of any company - e.g. one administration want to make use of local support companies for political reasons.
  • flexibility - Debian has a reputation of being better adaptable than other distribution
  • stability - Debian is both famous and notorious for having long release cycles. This accommodates the public sector especially.
  • price - Debian is available free of charge, with no constraint to use an expensive server variant.
