Installing Gnome

UNDER SID and SARGE

The current metapackage for installing a good set of Gnome tools in [http://www.debian.org/releases/unstable sid] and [http://www.debian.org/releases/testing sarge] is gnome. So, from the command line, run

 # apt-get install gnome

This will install additional software (gnome-office, evolution) that you may not want. For a smaller set of apps, you can also do

 # apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment

If you run sid and you aren't afraid of living on the bleeding edge, you may want to have a look at ?GnomeTwoDotSix instead.

UNDER WOODY

In [http://www.debian.org/releases/stable woody] no ["metapackage"] exists. Instead, run

 # apt-get install gnome-core gnome-panel gnome-control-center sawfish-gnome
