Installing Gnome
UNDER SID:
The current metapackage for installing a good set of Gnome tools in [http://www.debian.org/releases/unstable SID] is gnome-desktop-environment. So, from the command line, run
-# apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment
You can also do
-# apt-get install gnome
but this will install additional software (gnome-office, evolution) that you may not want.
UNDER SARGE:
Gnome is currently broken. The gnome-core package is still the old 1.4 version, but the other components are the newer 2.4. Install at your own risk on [http://www.debian.org/releases/testing SARGE]!
Progress report (Colin Watson / Jordi Mallach, 15 Jan 2004):
In order to get the new metapackages into testing, we need:
- new libxslt (1 day of wait)
- planner (1 days of wait)
- abiword and its deps (waiting for libxslt)
In order to get the meta-packages installable on all architectures, we need:
- mips version of epiphany-browser, rhythmbox and planner.
- m68k version of planner.
- sparc version of planner.
UNDER WOODY:
In [http://www.debian.org/releases/stable WOODY]No metapackage exists. Again, run
-# apt-get install gnome-core gnome-panel gnome-control-center gnome-sawfish
