Installing Gnome

UNDER SID:

The current metapackage for installing a good set of Gnome tools is gnome-desktop-environment. So, from the command line, run

-# aptitude install gnome-desktop-environment

You can also do

-# aptitude install gnome

but this will install additional software (gnome-office, evolution) that you may not want.

UNDER SARGE:

Gnome is currently broken. The gnome-core package is still the old 1.4 version, but the other components are the newer 2.4. Install at your own risk!

Progress report (Colin Watson, 14 Jan 2004):

In order to get the new metapackages into testing, we need:

  • build of epiphany-browser on sparc

  • galeon has been re-uploaded to fix some [http://bugs.debian.org/225193 build problems]; waiting for builds now

  • build of sound-juicer on m68k

  • build of libgda2 on m68k

  • build of libgnomedb on s390

  • fixes for [http://bugs.debian.org/libxslt1.1 upgrade bugs] in libxslt

  • build of planner on s390

This is looking pretty good, and the meta-gnome2 maintainer is willing to drop some of its dependencies once the last of the real essentials are ready. I'd estimate two weeks provided that galeon and libxslt are fixed soon.

Only one of epiphany-browser and galeon is needed.

UNDER WOODY:

No metapackage exists. Again, run

-# aptitude install gnome-core gnome-panel gnome-control-center gnome-session gnome-sawfish
