To make it easier to try the GIS tools provided in Debian, the Debian GIS project is making a live CD. It is based on the live-helper package with custom configuration and build scripts held in DebianGIS's SVN repository.
Boot with 'live locale=nb_NO.UTF-8 keyb=no' or similar to activate your language.
Content
The live image is based on Debian/Lenny. Here is a list of major applications included and their versions.

Data sets
Included data sets:
?OpenStreetmap.org planet.osm
Proposed data sets:
Some links here: http://grass.osgeo.org/wiki/Global_datasets
- vmap0 global 1:1million vector data
- strm 3" topography
- ETOPO1 1' global topography/bathymetry
- NASA Blue Marble (2002) global visual image
- NASA Earth at Night (Blue Marble 2002 website)
- Hi-res global coastline and political boundaries
- For coastlines we can use the GSHHS shoreline from NOAA. There are shapefiles about, or the latest version can be downloaded and converted to any OGR supported vector format using GRASS's v.in.gshhs addon module and v.out.ogr.
- For political boundaries we could use the vmap0 Digital Map of the World, but it's a bit lo-res.

Build rules
The build rules for the live CD are in DebianGIS's Subversion repository, in the packages/debian-gis/ directory.
To build a CD yourself, you have to have the live-helper package (version >= 1.0~a31) installed, then:
svn export svn://svn.debian.org/svn/pkg-grass/packages/debian-gis cd debian-gis chmod +x build-gis-live mkdir pub sudo ./build-gis-live
That's it.
If you want to install OpenStreetMap data put a planet.osm.bz2 to files/root/planet-latest.osm.bz2.
