Debian SunCamp 2017

Winter is coming to an end in the Northern Hemisphere, we are all in desperate need of some sunshine. We also want to meet again with our Debian buddies, discuss ideas, and work on new projects. Why not combine both?

Imagine being in a small town by the coast, hacking next to the swimming pool, deciding your team's plans over a drink, or plotting with your cabal in the sauna. Maybe combining this with a family holiday.

See the complete image gallery in this blog post.

If this sounds tempting, then come to Debian SunCamp 2017, a 4 day hacking and socialising event for Debian people.

Debian SunCamp (DSC for short) is not a conference, or a ?MiniConf, it is more like a DIY DebCamp. We want it to be relaxed, fun, and creative: we provide the space, anything else is up to you!

There will be no talks programme, but if you want to prepare a talk you can do that too, it's DIY!

Details

Organisation and discussion

SunCamp planning

What to expect

  • A family-run, recently renovated hotel with all kinds of amenities for adults and children.
  • A huge room (300m²) to be used both as hacklab, and as meetings or talks room.
  • Plenty of other spaces to sit with your laptop.
  • Swimming pool(s) and outside terraces (bring sunscreen!)
  • Good internet access throught the hotel.
  • A small event with a great atmosphere.
  • Catalonian^WSpanish^WIberian food, drink, and weather!

What not to expect

  • Any kind of sponsorship. We negotiated a flat rate that includes accommodation, food, and use of almost all facilities, but you have to pay for it directly to the hotel.
    • If your team wants to do a sprint here, you might be able to get some funds from Debian, but you have to do it yourself.
  • Swag. Unless somebody comes with a box full of goodies to give away, there will be no t-shirts, stickers, bags, mugs, or anything like that.
  • Pre-scheduled talks. If anybody wants to prepare a talk, there is a room to use, just add it to the table below.

  • Room assignment: If you want to save, find a roommate!
  • An assistance team. We cannot help with visas, put signs in the airport, or provide an immigration lawyer if Catalonia secedes during your stay in Lloret.

Events

As noted before, we will not have a events committee or scheduling. But we will provide a space for you to use, and timeslots will be coordinated during the event.

If you have already an idea for a event, just note it in this table.

Maybe one hour per evening on Thu/Fri/Sat?

Pricing

The prices are per person and day assuming double rooms. It's possible to be in a single room paying a supplement of 16 EUR / day over the following prices:

  • Full board: 53.1 EUR
  • Half board: 47.25 EUR
  • Only breakfast: 41.4 EUR

10% VAT is already included. Local taxes of 1 EUR/person/day NOT included, due to pay at arrival.

It's possible to request for a triple room, in this case, the third participant has a discount of 15%.

First child up to 12 years old doesn't pay, second child pay only 50% of the price.

Any special request for the room must be done directly to the hotel in the registration form. E.g.: wheelchair accessible room, cots, list attending child.

The hotel has a parking, it costs 10 EUR/day and it must be booked in advance. For bikes and motorbikes, there is a free secure bike storage.

How to register

You will need to book your own room, so put your name in the table below, and start looking for room mates!

To book your room, follow these steps:

  • Decide on your dates and food regime (only breakfast, half board, or full board). All the people in the same room have to share the food regime and dates.
  • You can book directly from the hotel website: http://www.hotelanabel.com/.

  • Select your dates, number of people, and input the booking code: DEB17. This only works if your booking includes the dates of the DSC.
  • Alternatively, this link will take you to the booking page with pre-filled dates and discount applied: http://deb.li/3kGgl

  • Select your room type and food regime. Press "Book".
  • Enter the personal details of all guests.
  • Make sure no unwanted extras are selected.
  • Finally, you will need to enter credit card details to secure the booking. Nothing will be deducted, it is only used in case of a no-show.

Hotel details

The hotel is wheelchair accessible, there are ramps at the entrance and leading to the courtyard. The working space is in the ground floor with no steps.

Hacking Space

The hotel has a 300m2 room for our exclusive use. This room can be split in 3 smaller rooms, so we can reserve 1/3 for meetings and have a big hacklab. They have promised to make sure we have good WiFi coverage and enough chairs and tables.

Wi-Fi

Throughout the hotel (and pool area) is free Wi-Fi provided to all guests:

  • ESSID: ?HotelAnabel

  • 2.4 GHz b/g/n?
  • low latency, but has had a couple of outages already
  • open network, with captive portal at http://172.26.0.150:12080 (requires ?JavaScript)

  • uses NAT range 172.26.0.0/16

But the conference area has a separate network and access points, with some outdoor coverage around that side of the pool:

  • ESSID: Events
  • WPA with passphrase: (ask)
  • no captive portal
  • seems to use NAT in the range 192.168.2.0/24, external IP 188.84.170.29

Fun

  • Access to the SPA included in the price
  • Gym access has a cost of 2 EUR person/day
  • The hotel also offers free ping-pong, two petanque courts, a few arcades, pool and air hockey table, board games and Wii
  • 320 m² outdoor swimming pool
  • Separate kiddie pool
  • Covered 70 m² heated swimming pool
  • Playground for children
  • Free lounge chairs and umbrellas
  • Snack bar with indoor and outside tables

Check the hotel website for full details.

Food

  • Meals are buffet-style
  • Breakfast is from 07:30 to 10:30 (includes free coffee)
  • Lunch is from 13:00 to 15:00
  • Dinner is from 19:00 to 21:30
  • All bookings include breakfast? including day of departure
  • Half-board also includes dinner (not lunch)
  • Full-board includes all meals
  • With the Debian booking code, meals provide a glass of wine or beer or soda or a 1/3 l bottle of water.
  • The hotel is happy to cater for vegetarian and vegan if given a list of the number of people. They are also very conscious of people with food allergies and any other food intolerance. Please mail tincho@d.o if you are included in any of this group so we can provide a count list to the hotel.

  • Tickets for Sarfa (Moventis)

  • Tickets for 605 (Sagalés)

  • Beware make sure you book on the right website for the bus you'll take. Tickets for 605 are not valid for Sarfa buses and viceversa.

  • If 5 or 6 people get together, the hotel offers a free pick-up service.

From Girona AVE Train Station

  • Bus station is crossing the road from train station.
  • There are direct AVE/TGV trains from Madrid, Zaragoza, Perpignan, Toulouse, Montpellier, Lyon and Paris to Girona, among other cities.
  • Bus tickets are sold in an office under the elevated railway viaduct, in a somewhat hidden office. From the railway station, go to the station ticket offices, leave from the exit on the right while facing them, then turn left and left again.
  • Buses: Lines 660 and e4. Fare 5,95€. Timetable for Girona - Lloret has greatly improved since last year.

  • If 5 or 6 people get together, the hotel offers a free pick-up service.

From Barcelona (El Prat airport or city)

The simplest way to reach Lloret is the shuttle bus (SARFA). They have boarding points at terminal 1, terminal 2, and Estació del Nord, arrives at Lloret estació (bus station). Note that you need to buy tickets in the company desks, at least in Estació del Nord and Lloret estació (not sure about BCN airport).

  • Description of fares: https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g187497-i44-k8812687.html

  • Standard fare €12,90 + €-,40 online booking fee (single-way; I don't see return tickets offered), journey time is 2 hours
  • Online booking requires name and passport number before purchase - does not use HTTPS for that - but does for payment card details
  • Language changes back to Catalan half-way through ordering process
  • I didn't receive the email with the actual tickets! You can find a link to those on the order confirmation/summary page: "Imprimir Bitllets: VER IN nnnnnn" to print each ticket - be careful not to miss this!
  • There are ticket offices open every day at Barcelona Estació del Nord, and Lloret Estació, but there is not one at BCN airport it seems

Alternative option (more complicated):

  • Take the R2 train from the airport (the train station is next to terminal 2 departures, there is a bridge connecting the buildings), change at Sants or Clot Aragó for the R1 train to Blanes, and finally take a local bus to Lloret. Trains depart from platform 8 from Sants, platform 4 from Clot Aragó. Board trains R1 destination Blanes or Maçanet, or RG1 trains (NOT R11) to Figueres or Portbou.
  • The train journey takes 90 minutes from Sants to Blanes, and run every 30 minutes. Trains from Airport to Barcelona also run every 30 minutes. See the times and connections in the Rodalies website, search from "Aeroport" to "Blanes". Fare is 8€ up to Lloret.

  • If coming from the airport, AVOID taking the metro: fare is 4,5€, it's slower to get to Barcelona and the rail ticket from Sants costs exactly the same as from the Airport railway station.
  • Rail timetables on PDF: Airport - Barcelona, Barcelona - Blanes. As a general rule, the Airport trains depart at :08 :38 and take 22' up to Sants (arrivals :00 :30); trains to Blanes depart from Sants at :16 :46 on weekdays, :13 :43 weekends.

  • The bus Blanes-Lloret runs also every 30 minutes and wait for the train. here.

Getting from Girona to GRO

Sagalés operates a bus (607: Girona — Fornells de la Selva — Aeroport de Girona) every hour from 5 am until midnight. Departures from the airport to Girona hourly at :30; from Girona to the airport at :00. the timetables.

Side visit to Girona Temps de Flors

From May 13th to May 21th Girona will hold its annual "Temps de Flros" festival (lit. Time of Flowers). Many streets and houses from the old quarter have floral arrangements for display, many of them are amazing.

Official website is http://www.gironatempsdeflors.net but currently (as of March 27th) show outdated info from the 2016 edition. You can see samples of displays from previous years here.

If you have a spare day and/or if you arrive via Girona, it's worth a visit. The fact that the person writing these lines is from there has nothing to do with my neutral opinion, really :-)

Due to the perishable nature of flowers, it's better to visit as soon as possible. Also try to avoid weekends as they get really crowded.

FAQ

If you have any question, leave it here, we'll reply them.

Q: can we arrive earlier than 18th / stay later than 21th at the prices above? (this allows to get cheaper flights)

Yes, but you must still use the Debian booking code for the days of the conference, to pay for the conference space and amenities. You could book other days separately...

Yes, it's low season and the hotel will have plenty of space. Our prices are slightly more expensive (around 3-4 EUR/day) of the prices you get if you reserve without the group code and pay in advance. This is because we have to pay a small fee for the renting of the 300m2 room and because our meals have included drinks (if not, you have to pay at least 2EUR in every meal for a drink). My advise: if you're staying more days, consider doing an independent reservation without food for those extra days, so you have the possibility of eating outside the hotel. It's likely the food from the hotel will be a bit repetitive/boring for more than 4 days.

Q: can I attend even if I am not staying at the hotel?

Yes. The hotel staff understands that some people will attend the event and go sleeping to their house or on separate accommodation.

They only ask us to know who's coming, and to register on arrival, so access to the hacklab can be controlled. So please add yourself to the list of attendees even if you are not sleeping at the hotel.

You will have the option to eat in the restaurant with the rest of the people, for 12 EUR/meal, get coffee/drinks from the bar, etc.

Q: any volunteers needed? (networking, videoing?)

we're not planning to have video and we don't even know if we'll have talks ;) Networking is fully provided by the hotel. One of the selling points of this hotel (besides the deal to get the hacking space) was that we got the mail of the guy in charge of the network and he seems to be quite knowledgeable and understood quickly our needs.

Q: can the hotel provide enough power strips, or should we bring some?

The hotel will take care of this, as well as leaving a router in the meeting room, so we can connect devices by ethernet if needed.
