Can I use an IDE HDD in an external USB case for the install instead of a thumb drive?
unclear question: installation *to* an external hdd will most likely work (has to be tested), but booting from it with the EEE afterwards will most likely not work automatically if you have not installed to it in "superfloppy" mode (i.e. without partition table etc.). Installation *from* an external hdd should work as with the USB stick, but with the same problem as described above. Press the Esc key on bootup and select the device manually then. Installation (or booting) from a CDROM drive in an external USB case doesn't work (tested).
do i need the EFI partition or is it safe to delete?
It's safe to delete that, debian won't need it.
