Skolelinux roadmap

The goal for the DebianEdu project is to release Skolelinux at the same time as Debian. In general Debian is released every 18-24 month with security updates over a period of about 36 months after the release. Our experience is that the schools don't have the manpower to upgrade every year. A lifespan of 2-3 years is more suited for the system admins with scarce resources.

Skolelinux is a enterprise distro tailormade for maintenance from a central operation centre. Many municipalities run their Skolelinux servers centrally for many schools. The system can also be maintained localy at a school or small or medium business.

Lenny roadmap

Here we will collect items for our roadmap to lenny. Do not just edit this list. Contact h01ger via debian-edu@lists.debian.org before doing so. Thanks.

  • consider our etch as frozen after the release of r1 (except if major bugs show up)
  • dak should be upgraded (to support new features like ~ in versions)
    • we need to create new suites (lenny, sid, maybe lenny-test later)
    • modify builder to build etch and lenny images (debian-cd cannot do this)
  • 311188 needs to be fixed so that we can be a real CDD and be part of lenny

  • points from [?DebianEdu/LinEx2DebianEdu-Roadmap] need to be included

    • make it possible to choose between kde and gnome
    • use different network addresses than 10.0.x.y and domain name
    • keep in mind: there will be a frozen lenny deployment in summer of 2008 by ?LinEx

  • enhance lwat (csv-import for hosts/netgroups, configuring dhcpd), or switch/also support [http://mds.mandriva.org/wiki mds] and/or [http://ebox-platform.com/ ebox]

  • polish desktop
    • improve menu structure in debian, also translated menus
    • wallpapers etc
  • improve documentation
  • translated documentation
  • free + distributable [DebianEdu/JavaInDebianEdu java] and [DebianEdu/FlashInDebianEdu flash]

  • improve scalability of libnss-ldap
  • enable ssl-cert-checking for any service
  • load-balancing + high availability for LTSP clients [http://mille-xterm.org mille]

  • print quota handling
  • print groups
  • nice to have: dhcp and bind configuration from ldap
  • nice to have: fai + puppet to configure (and install) systems
  • nice to have: make it easier to change the LDAP base name
    • step 1: document what is needed

Stuff we missed in etch, will be moved to the roadmap after lunch.

ldap-access

Find a way to check the SSL certificates when talking to the LDAP server, and fix lwat and samba to work with the new setup

not for r1

task framework

Change the task installation framework to handle language specific list of packages to install

skip for r1, unless someone does it on the way

windows installer

Include a windows installer on the CDs and DVD

not needed for r1

windows software

Include on the DVD some Windows install packages for useful Windows software (odt plugin for word, OOo, Firefox, etc)

not needed for r1

network-manager

Update the network-manager packages to use a backport from unstable to fix some console user access issues. (And only install it in standalone and not workstation+laptops installs) #426462 - it only work in standalone installs, because a workstation uses pam_group to grant group membership, and that does not work with hal and network-manager.

not for r1

dak

upgrade to new dak version

not needed for r1
