While it's no problem using rdiff-backup on the command-line, or editing /etc/slbackup/slbackup.conf and /etc/cron.d/slbackup using your favourite editor, there should be a web-interface or some other gui to make it easier to administer the backups. A php-based frontend is started, and some screenshots are availible from http://bzz.no/~finnarne/slbackup/screenshots

Another point of view may be, to use existing debian packages which already have the features we need and are well maintaned in debian, so that there is no need to reinvent the wheel every time. The package backuppc has all features we need and can be integrated into DebianEdu easily, I think. I've installed it on a tjener and began testings. The special configurations needed to get it doing what it should do are relativly small and I can provide them from my testing environment. They are described in an english wikipage here ["http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/HowTo/BackupPC"], so that they can be discussed. The german version can be seen here ["http://wiki.skolelinux.de/BackupPC"] For getting informed about what backuppc can do for you, read this ["http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/faq/BackupPC.html"]

  * Source CD should include source for only the binary packages included -> set SOURCE=1. then we need to check if all the source packages from the binary packages on our CD are on that CD...
  * Currently, slbackup is installed, and is usable, though without any kind of gui-interface since webmin was removed. Either slbackup needs to be replaced with something else, or we need a gui of some kind.
     1. slbackup-php - A php-based frontend for slbackup, with most wanted features, and some screenshots are availible from http://bzz.no/~finnarne/slbackup/screenshots. The package is waiting for a sponsor to be uploaded into debian.
     1. backuppc, which already is in debian. Nice gui for restoring data, but lacks a good configuration editor. Tested and report availible at. ["http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/HowTo/BackupPC"], so that they can be discussed. The german version can be seen here ["http://wiki.skolelinux.de/BackupPC"] For getting informed about what backuppc can do for you, read this ["http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/faq/BackupPC.html"]

Status of the Etch-based DebianEdu

This page describes the status of the Etch-based DebianEdu distribution. The status of other Debian-stuff can be found in ["Status"].

Tips and Testing Instructions can be found at [:DebianEdu/Etch:DebianEdu/Etch]

Known bugs

This is a list of known bugs in the Etch-based DebianEdu, and please provide links to the bugs in the Debian BTS or the DebianEdu [http://bugs.skolelinux.org/ Bugzilla].

Fatal (can't make test CD with these)

Important (need to fix before release)

  • Missing user administration system
    • [http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/AdminToolForEtch ?AdminToolForEtch]

    • replace with cipux? -> three blockers:

      1. security review of cipux (the backend) (URL?)
      2. automatic installation incl. configuration (in etch/sid)
      3. migration plan for existing wlus setups (Georg Damm wrote migration scripts)
    • replace with lwat?
  • Missing administration tool for backup/restore
  • Source CD should include source for only the binary packages included -> set SOURCE=1. then e need to check if all the source packages from the binary packages on our CD are on that CD...

  • standalone install is not localised. i.e., I selected german and KDE is still english
  • Wrong keyboard layout in LTSP, should be set by localization-config
  • Spell checker configuration is needed (KDE to use myspell?)
  • USB hotplug no longer work after KDE switched from pmount to hal. [http://bugs.debian.org/377689 bug #377689] see also [http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2006/10/msg00752.html pam_group info]

  • Do we Need a sane default DB_CONFIG for ldap ?
  • Samba broken: needs details (testing)

Annoying (should fix if we have time)

  • CD is not signed -> setting SECURED=1 in CONF-$flavor.sh was not enough

  • Artwork should be generally improved
  • Setting up networking and Configuring network interfaces fail in the booting of ltsp clients, looks ugly.
  • Anoying Artsmessages box about permision denied on /dev/dsv for each user that login. (on the thin clients? it works nicely in the standalone install)
  • Adept_notifier runs on all users kde on the thinclients.
  • Empty resolv.conf in ltsp chroot after installation
  • Expand on the nagios v2 configuration.
  • GPGerror: no debian-edu-archive-keyring for /opt/ltsp/i386 sources.list ?
  • warning about problems configuring cups via debconf from debian-edu-config at the kdm-login screen after a standalone install

needs evaluation

Fixed

  • etch-cd from 2006-11-16 partitioning doesnt work, loops forever, etch-test works.
  • Access to local devices for the console user (audio, floppy, etc)
  • CD image do not install because of kernel version skew between the kernel and the module udebs on the CD.
  • Fail to install on a HD where lvm have been used previously, this is fixed in D-I daily builds from sid (Verified 16/10-2006 -Ronny). Migrated to etch 20/10-2006
  • LTSP artwork -> added to ltsp preseed, ldm artwork ok.

  • Broken LTSP boot, first client attempth fail to boot, after server is restarted - fixed in initramfs-tools 0.82.
  • Wrong keyboard layout in some countries. [http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=319859 #319859]

  • usplash in ltsp booting clients.
  • slapd fail to start because /var/run/slapd is missing. It need to be owned by openldap:openldap.
  • Unstable CD build, no longer build broken CD when unable to reach the apt sources.
  • Installer fail if running in GUI mode [http://bugs.debian.org/282147 #282147]

  • LDAP NSS is broken [http://bugs.debian.org/375077 #375077] We have a workaround in the current cd's.

  • Package manager (adept) for KDE is missing in etch [http://bugs.debian.org/388023 #388023]

  • Graphical Installer fails to work while installing with nogui works as expected

Please fill in with more info and links to the BTS's in the list above. :)

  • $anything_else
  • add a short chapter how to use backports.org (i just read a mail from someone who upgraded to etch because sarge doesnt have openoffice.org2)
  • barebone profile? (whats that?) via expert mode ("Again if you want to install with the debian-edu-expert mode type the following line at the boot prompt and press enter: "linux debian-edu-expert"
  • manual partitioning via expert mode
