In November, 2002, a PHP/Mysql project was started in order to keep track of schools using DebianEdu/Skolelinux. Back then, these schools were named "Testskoler" (no: testing schools). Now as DebianEdu grew up, we call them reference schools.

Debian-Edu/Skolelinux Reference Schools

Introduction

  • "There are DebianEdu users all over the world. A very easy form of contribution is to let us know you exist and use Debian Edu (this motivates us very much and therefore is already a valuable contribution. :) )

The DebianEdu projects provide a database of schools and users of the system to help the users find each other, and also to have an idea about where the users of the distribution are located. Please let us know about your installation, by registering in this database. To register, use this [http://skolelinux.no/slschools/editschool.php?lang=en web form]." (quote from release notes for Skolelinux 3.0, 2007)

Schools who decide to use DebianEdu/Skolelinux as free Custom Debian Distribution, are kindly asked [http://skolelinux.no/slschools/editschool.php?lang=en to sign up to this database]. Thus,

  • schools using DebianEdu/Skolelinux will easily be able to get in touch;
  • developers can follow the major types of environments (also check out [wiki:DebianEdu/PopularityContest ?PopCon]);

  • schools can get free extra publicity; every 50th school will get named in a press release (if they agree).

Statistics

By May, 2006, almost 150 schools have been registered voluntary in the database of reference schools. Two third of these (i.e. over 100) are from Norway, mother land of DebianEdu/Skolelinux. About 30 registered schools are in German speaking countries. There are further schools in France, Spain, Denmark, Poland, Mali, Eritrea, Ireland, Greece and Belgium.

Below, you can find a graph displaying the growth of users:

Another chart shows [http://skolelinux.no/slschools/countrychart.php?lang=en&type=.png in what countries DebianEdu/Skolelinux is used].
