Skolelinux 3.0 Terra available for free download!
* Oslo - July 12, 2007
A new version of Skolelinux, named Terra, has been released. Skolelinux is a result of a world wide community effort. Recently ?LinEx in Extremadura in Spain has joined the Skolelinux, also known as Debian Edu.
Support for Laptops is vastly improved with power management. A new and improved system for user administration has been added. ?LowFat workstations[1] and thin clients now work out of the box. Terra supports USB pens, CD/DVD-rom, video and sound. We recommend ?LowFat workstations for multimedia.
Many educational programs have been upgraded, including GCompris, KDE-Edu, OpenOffice.org and Iceweasel (based on Firefox). Now there are support for more than 50 languages. Skolelinux can be installed on three different processor architectures as Power PC, i386 and amd64 from one single DVD. All GNU/Linux source-code are available. An CD is also available for net install.
There are no license costs associated with using Skolelinux. We invite all to join Debian Edu's community effort making free software available for schools.
About Skolelinux
Skolelinux is the DebianEdu project's Custom Debian Distribution. It is installed in hundreds of schools in Norway, Germany, France and other countries. Municipalities and Commercial Service Providers run Skolelinux across multiple schools, operated and maintained centrally. Service providers report that low-fat workstations require half the maintenance cost of other desktop alternatives.
The next milestone of Skolelinux development will be to merge the Debian-based ?LinEx distro into DebianEdu[2]. Currently ?LinEx is used by more than 250,000 students and public employees in the region of Extremadura in Spain.
New technology
?LowFat clients is also known as Diskless workstations. They run applications locally on the client. All software comes from the server instead of locally from the client hard drive. Recommended minimum requirement for client machines is > 256 MB RAM and 800 MHz CPU.

Please note that the documentation for the etch release is only available in English at the moment. We expect translations to show up in the coming weeks and in the upcoming 3.0 r1 release.
