1: Press release

Debian-Edu: Skolelinux 5.0 (5.0.4+edu0) available for free download!

* Oslo, Hamburg, Badajoz, Tokio, Taipeh - February 8, 2010

Skolelinux 5.0 is ready. This is a community release with comprehensive support from regional and national projects in Norway, Germany, Spain, Denmark, Taiwan, Japan and other places. Skolelinux is Debian for education, produced by the Debian Edu team.

Several other projects have contributed additional functionality to Skolelinux, to tailor it for both local and international needs. Skolelinux can be installed in more than 50 languages.

What's new:

Skolelinux is now deployed at many schools in municipalities, regions and states throughout Europe, Asia and South America. It is used by 250.000 students and teachers at 200 schools in Extremadura. The German states of Rheinland-Pfalz and Hamburg are providing Skolelinux for their schools. The Indian state Karnataka are basing their ICT@School project on Skolelinux. The Debian Edu team also co-operates with the Debian based Linux Educacionale distribution, used by more than 30 million students in Brazilian schools.

Skolelinux is an enterprise solution

Skolelinux is design to be maintainable and extremely stable for millions of students. The software installed is carefully picked by hand with stability in mind, dismissing bleeding edge products. In many countries the educational sector are maintaining more computers for more users than any other branch of the government. Running bleeding edge software will add considerable burden on user support and system availability. This might double or triple the need for system maintenance, which is added cost schools don't got in their budgets.

Due to the enterprise features and the built inn support for diskless workstation, Skolelinux provides half the total cost of ownership compared to any other desktop alternative in schools. By using Skolelinux schools get twice the number of computers which got less than half the maintenance cost compared to proprietary alternatives. The manpower cost of maintaining one Skolelinux workstation is less than 50 Euro a year, according to the technical staff who maintains Skolelinux on 80.000 computers in Extremadura, Spain.

If using traditional networked workstations with proprietary software, the government must either beef up their computer staff considerably, or drastically reduce the number of computers which are maintained in a proper manner in schools. Not to forget. Many got a kid room perspective on computer maintenance, believing that computers are run in large networks as they would do at home. Let it be clear, a kid room perspective soon makes computers useless when 5-10 different students uses a school computer every day. Skolelinux is an enterprise solution for central maintenance, making system maintenence easy for thousands and millions of students through the whole school year.

Going forward from 5.0.4+edu0
