Summary
1. lwat 0.16 in etch r1 or 0.15-1.edu.etch.3
- Petter says: my personal and quite uninformed opinion on lwat is that the version we included in r0 was quite rough, and that we could use any improvement it can get in r1. On the other hand, we need to make sure it does not break anything that did work previously. At least we should do our best, and be ready to fix bugs quickly if regressions are reported. That make me conclude that 0.16-1 is probably a good choice, after we make sure it can actually create users. Ronny and Holger agree to the plan of testing of the most recent package, and use that. Petter asks to document a bit better how to update netgroups in lwat. Holger suggests to investigate that new samba feature of lwat which he would prefer over winnie's suggestion to only make a bugfix release, but he is aksing for confirmation here. Petter sees no problem as long as it does not break any old features. Neither Petter, Ronny nor Holger seem to be really familar with the samba setup in edu, but Holger is refering to lwat doc+changelog. Ronny closes this discussion by suggesting that anyone have anything against using the latest lwat say so on the mailinglist.
2. 3.0 r1 status?
- Release candidates: lwat, d-e-doc, d-e-artwork and slbackup-php Ronny says etch-test is just built so we are currently at the bleeding edge of debian-cd versions. hopefullt the cd/dvd is functional. Holger and Petter agree to update those 4 packages and release r1. Holger reminds what a release means: build cds and publish/announce them and all the PR work, Petter ads need for testing even if he can not do it for the next two weeks.
Ronny thinks about postponing some goals from [http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/roadmap]. Ronny asks about possibility to enable the windows installer but thinks we should stop wishing for features that postpone r1. Holger argues that it would require win32-loader which is only in lenny. There seems to be a consensus that while it would be a nice feature an installer for a different arch would be considered as major change and thus no target for R1. Holger asks about the status of some roadmap items:
- ldap-access - Find a way to check the SSL certificates when talking to the LDAP
- server, and fix lwat; Petter and Holger agreed to remove this from the roadap
- task framework - Change the task installation framework to handle language specific
- list of packages to install; Ronny and Holger agree to skip this point for R1
- network-manager - Update the network-manager packages to use a backport from
- unstable to fix some console user access issues. There seem to be open problems about standalone / workstation+laptops installs especially because it is not really clear whether Laptops should be handled as workstation or standalone. Petter suggests: As long as we are not sure about network-manager, I say we delay it to r2 or later. Ronny and Holger agreed to this.
holger will document that laptops should be installed as standalone, because ldap+nfs (and therefore homedirs) will not work if the laptop is used at home/not in school. Sidenote: Werner asks about syncronising laptops with server using unison. There are positive reports about this tool but it might consume some resources and rsync can do as well. Holger hopes to find time to fix d-e-doc issues and can play release manager a bit.
