18:00:28

pere

so, lets start this meeting. :)

18:00:28

* danielsan

= Daniel Hess

18:00:49

pere

no andreas tille, no summary writer?

18:00:49

* zobel

= Martin Zobel-Helas

18:01:38

danielsan

it seems so :(

18:01:42

pere

no h01ger, no log collector either.

18:02:14

danielsan

collecting the log is no problem, if h01ger does not show up, i could dump my log to the wiki

18:03:24

pere

ok. so only the log collector is missing.

18:04:11

pere

any volunteer to write the summary and post it on the wiki and the mailing list?

18:05:56

pere

without anyone writing the summary, very few will notice what happened during the meeting, and we can just as well skip the meeting and pretend it did not happen.

18:08:29

danielsan

the agenda seems to be short enough to not make a long summary, so if no one else, ...

18:08:47

-!-

markos [~markos@85.72.71.186] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]

18:08:47

pere

great. thank you.

18:09:03

pere

so, the worms can safely come out of the woodwork now.

18:09:24

pere

if you are present during the meeting, please help the summary writer by using /me = Full Name.

18:09:43

pere

First on the agenda is "Status of 3.0r1 release".

18:10:51

danielsan

the big blocker are the documentation and some bugs that should be fixed, right?

18:11:27

pere

well, my approach is to release whatever we have ready at the moment, so for me the blocker is lack of time.

18:11:48

pere

I had some time last weekend, but did not manage to get the release ready.

18:11:56

pere

and then I did not have much time left.

18:12:28

pere

there are several fixes waiting in etch-test that should be pushed into stable, and that is quite a lot of work involving several people.

18:12:47

pere

a few of them are in, but there are several left.

18:12:59

danielsan

i'm currently busy finishing my "project work" (Projektarbeit) at my univerity, so i can start my diploma thesis, so i can't help much currently

18:13:18

pere

everyone seem to be busy, yeah.

18:13:29

pere

a new doc package is really needed.

18:13:52

pere

and I would love to have fixed lwat, without the embarrasing password bug.

18:13:59

pere

not sure how far winnie and finnarne is on that work.

18:14:22

pere

there is also the adaptec raid problem, but no solution is known so far.

18:14:55

pere

bugzilla need some sorting, to make sure the P1-P2 bugs are bugs we really want to have fixed in r1.

18:15:10

danielsan

did not somebody write, that this controller is very common in the servers used in norway?

18:15:17

pere

I wrote that.

18:15:34

pere

and some report success, while other report problems, and no-one have been able to pinpoint what trigger the failure.

18:15:57

danielsan

bad

18:16:02

pere

yeah.

18:16:22

pere

so, r1 need more work, and people pushing fixed packages into stable from etch-test.

18:16:39

pere

more on this agenda point?

18:16:47

danielsan

not from me :)

18:16:57

pere

Next agenda point: Release notes up to date and ready for translators?

18:17:11

-!-

Andreas [~tille@p4FD59C76.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has joined #debian-edu

18:17:17

pere

I put the point on the agenda, because I want to get more focus on the documentation.

18:17:46

pere

did someone read it lately? I suspect it could use some cleanup before we tell the translators to start working.

18:18:11

Andreas

Hi, just back from the off. Telekom changed my DSL-Splitter and my live starts again (hopefully).

18:18:16

danielsan

i would like to improve some sections (about lwat and windows workstation in the network) but have not found time so far

18:18:26

pere

Andreas: hi. please /me = Full Name for the summary writer.

18:18:38

* Andreas

= Andreas Tille

18:18:46

pere

Andreas: danielsan volunteered to write the summary in your absence.

18:19:10

Andreas

I hope to be able to write the summary of the next meeting when I can take part all time.

18:19:24

pere

if everyone have a look and improve the doc, we can get good release notes done soon.

18:19:43

pere

(not that the release notes are bad. We send admins there all the time here in norway when they ask questions. :)

18:19:53

klausade

pere: seems the fix in munin-node 1.2.5-2.0.edu.etch.3 for df_inode didn't work. df graphs partitions with +, while df_inode doesn't, or so it seems.

18:20:56

pere

klausade: damned. :/

18:22:04

pere

when arriving, please use /me = Full Name.

18:22:13

pere

so, is the release notes ready for the translators?

18:23:03

pere

if any of you have time to check out the release notes, which are available from http://wiki.skolelinux.no/DebianEdu/Documentation/Etch, please let the list know when you checked it and if you believe it is ready for translators or not.

18:23:09

pere

should we move on?

18:23:32

danielsan

it is better then it was the last time i looked at it, but i would say it still needs some love

18:23:37

danielsan

yes, please

18:23:56

pere

Next agenda point: Next step to use cdd-dev tool (Andreas)

18:24:27

danielsan

pere: not your point 3?

18:24:41

danielsan

ah :)

18:24:42

-!-

H [~h@tor-irc.dnsbl.oftc.net] has joined #debian-edu

18:24:46

pere

lets do that afterwards, and use Andreas when he is present. :)

18:25:52

pere

when arriving, please use /me = Full Name.

18:26:25

Andreas

Ah, yes, sorry I was on a differnet screen

18:26:37

Andreas

So, cdd-dev 0.4 is out and in testing.

18:27:00

Andreas

The only necessary change to build the next debian-edu packages would be to exchange debian/rules

18:27:10

Andreas

and optionally the Makefile

18:27:30

Andreas

I'd suggest to do this immediately after R1 release

18:27:52

Andreas

I was waiting for comments on the versioned dependency againt education-tasks

18:28:00

Andreas

Any opinions?

18:28:40

pere

I am positive, as long as the generated control file, the tasksel task and the package list do not change because of the replacement.

18:29:10

Andreas

Well, they change regarding the versioned dependency which was originally not bound to a version

18:29:45

pere

I saw it when I uploaded the new debian-edu package, and concluded that it should not do any harm.

18:30:12

* klausade

= klaus ade johnstad

18:30:13

Andreas

Ah, right I remember that I changed gen-control regarding to this

18:30:28

Andreas

So yes, the resulting control file should not differ from the current.

18:30:50

Andreas

I take this as agreement to change afterr 3.0R1, right?

18:31:28

pere

well, I want the new debian-edu package into r1, but switching to cdd-dev should probably wait.

18:31:52

pere

anything more on this? I am not quite ready to start on the live cd stuff.

18:32:41

Andreas

I hope we could alöso generalise live cd stuff into cdd-dev to enable other CDDs

18:32:45

Andreas

profit from this.

18:32:59

Andreas

IMHO this is a great topic for 17.-21. October in Extremadura

18:34:33

pere

yeah.

18:34:54

pere

so, finished eating, and ready for the live stuff. should we move on?

18:35:01

Andreas

yes

18:35:03

danielsan

:)

18:35:11

Andreas

hope you had a nice dinner

18:35:20

pere

Next agenda point: Plans for live images (Petter)

18:35:23

Andreas

BTW, I'm very keen on Spanish food!

18:35:52

pere

I've been looking at the live cd/dvd situation, and have a few observations.

18:36:39

pere

first of all, the cfengine rules are incomplete. some of the config changes are done in the postinst script and d-i hooks, and this do not happen when I build the live images. this is annoying, and we need to move those config changes into the debian-edu-config package.

18:37:31

pere

next, the german live image did not include any LTSP server stuff. I saw claims that it was a working thin client server fitting on a CD, but that is just not true. /opt/ltsp/ is missing on that live CD.

18:38:18

pere

last, the NFS kernel server do not work properly with unionfs. I hope the user space server work, but it is not a valid dependency for ltsp-server. will need more work to get that stuff together.

18:38:48

pere

so, for the future.

18:39:34

danielsan

does the userspace nfs-server not have other drawbacks?

18:39:39

pere

I believe the standalone image is working just fine. the only design question to resolve is whether the students kde kiosk mode should be enabled on it or not. at the moment it is enabled, but I am not sure it is the correct approach.

18:40:25

pere

danielsan: it might be slightly slower, but actually have other advantages. I believe it look up netgroups when needed, and not only when exportfs is called to make the content of /etc/exports known to the kernel.

18:41:28

danielsan

pere: so your plan is, to support not only standalone but also a whole skolelinux netowrk from live-cd?

18:41:38

pere

the other image I am building, the main-server+thin-client-server, have several problems. the nfs issues is one thing. there is also bugs in the network setup, breaking bind9, squid, slapd and others. I am slowly approaching a point where the server actually boot as it should. not yet, as the resolv.conf file is bad.

18:41:51

pere

danielsan: yes.

18:42:03

danielsan

cool

18:42:05

pere

I want a main-server + thin-client-server with the diskless workstation stuff enabled.

18:42:16

pere

but that will not fit on a CD. I hope it will fit on a DVD.

18:42:30

pere

the two iso images are ~1.2 GiB at the moment.

18:42:50

pere

I expect the diskless workstation stuff will add 1 GiB to the image.

18:43:08

pere

it is still within the 4.4 GiB limit of a DVD, so it should work.

18:43:33

danielsan

that would be nice

18:44:10

pere

I welcome help with the build. the scripts for building is in src/build/live-CD/. You need a lot of disk space ~10 GiB, and a debian mirror available.

18:45:05

* danielsan

would like to, but has to finish the other stuff first, sorry :(

18:45:20

pere

there is a new live image package available, and it removed the make-live script I use. It is replaced with other scripts, so to upgrade on a.s.n, I need to rewrite the build.sh script to use the new interface.

18:46:03

pere

the new packages fixes a few annoying bugs, for example that the build process changes the hostname of the build host during build. this of course affect the services running on the build host.

18:46:15

pere

any questions?

18:47:19

pere

Next agenda point: Next meeting?

18:47:39

danielsan

yes, we should have one :)

18:48:30

danielsan

but maybe we need to promote it a bit more, so more people will attend

18:49:26

pere

yeah.

18:49:32

-!-

?AnTi [~tille@p4FD598BE.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has joined #debian-edu

18:50:03

?AnTi

Uhm, DSL remains weak. :-(((

18:50:11

danielsan

daily remainders to the ml? :)

18:50:39

pere

danielsan: not sure what will work to get people to show up. perhaps a new try to find a time that suit most people?

18:50:55

pere

improved DSL links might work too...

18:51:03

danielsan

a call for votes on the list?

18:51:57

pere

worth a try. but I suspect we should fix the date and time for next meeting now, to make sure that do not depend on a process that might or might not conclude some time in the future.

18:52:27

?AnTi

Hmmm, just bought a brand new professional Funkwerk "Bintec R230a" - profesional thing with ssh login, DynDNS, VPN etc

18:52:56

?AnTi

... and learned that my old simple one is contouning working, while the new super duper profesional thingy seems to have trouble with

18:53:06

?AnTi

384 kBit :-((((

18:53:25

?AnTi

Yes - I'm living inside the wood which is nice except of DSL-speed

18:53:25

pere

any suggestions on a date for the next meeting?

18:53:44

danielsan

in two weeks?

18:53:49

pere

ok

18:54:01

danielsan

same or other day?

18:54:03

-!-

18:54:23

pere

I would rather move it away from monday, while avoiding tuesday and thursday. :)

18:54:37

?AnTi

I'd like to avoid Wednesday

18:54:58

?AnTi

Or perhaps Wednesday at 21:00?

18:55:12

?AnTi

I mean 19:00 UTC

18:55:16

danielsan

thursday and friday does not work for me in two weeks, rest of the week would be ok for me

18:55:32

pere

I am busy the 24th and 25th.

18:55:51

pere

26-30 is ok with me.

18:56:32

pere

26th 21:00?

18:56:41

?AnTi

Would be fine for me.

18:56:47

danielsan

me too

18:57:05

pere

what about the rest?

18:57:16

pere

klausade?

18:57:28

pere

18:58:14
