Answers to the questions should be provided on numbered sheets by using the reference number of each question and limited to the maximum length of text indicated. Do not forget to complete your application with the declaration and signature box below. Unsigned applications will not be accepted. 1. Project / network content (maximum 3 pages) 1. Why is the project / network / thematic seminar needed? Explain the rationale and the background of the project / network / thematic seminar. Training home of fellow companions from Emmaüs France started a project which wants to recycle computer and humans beings. In partner ship with the French education institution they took part in the European project SkoleLinux. SkoleLinux is a project started few years ago. His goal is to produce a computerized, open-source and free teaching tool. Several teams are working on this project at the moment in Europe. Few problems still prevent today this project to access the success he is worthy of. First, there're too few people involved in the development. Second, there's no study made which could show the profit offered by this project. Last, there's for the moment no tool to translate and share the resources on the international side. 2. In case of networks / thematic seminars, what is the main targeted thematic area? New methods and educational resources using the SkoleLinux open source solution as a tool to produce and diffuse teaching resource. 3. What are the objectives of the project / network / thematic seminar? What is the expected impact of the project / network / thematic seminar on the situation described under point 1.1? This project has 3 main goals: - Development of the computerized teaching tool: produce a system easy to install and easy to use - Experimentation and evaluation: install the system in various environments to evaluate the solution on pedagogical side, but also on the economical one. - Pooling of teaching resources: an evolutionary tool to translate and share teaching resources existing in the country of the partners. 4. What are the main outputs / products (e.g. training courses and modules, guides, directories, common tools, Web-based services, multimedia products, syntheses, needs analyses, reports, comparative analyses, conferences, seminars etc.) to be developed by the project / network? - One (or more) cdrom to install easily a computer network which offers a Numeric working Environment - A study made in each country of the partners, in schools and also adults teaching institutes. A synthesis of this work will be done by a Trading school and a team of teaching professionals. - A web site to share and translate teaching resources: this tool should permit to obtain, for example, a software which exist only in English translated to French, German . 5. What are the main activities of the project / network in order to achieve the outputs / products? If possible please provide the approximate timetable foreseen. - Year 1: o Starting seminar and installation of the web site o Development seminar o Publication of the first Cdroms - Year 2: o Translating seminar o Installation of tests sites o Development seminar - Year 3: o Translating seminar o Data collect, analysis o Evaluation seminar, analysis publication 6. What are the precise targets groups which will benefit directly and indirectly from the outputs / products and activities of the project / network / thematic seminar? Our targets groups will be all the groups who will be able to test SkoleLinux as teaching toll, notably: - Childs and young people in learning situations (secondary schools, high schools..) - Adults in difficulties (Emmaüs network) - Adults who encounter difficulties with integration and illiteracy (Emmaüs, adults teaching institutes) 7. What are the main pedagogical concepts and methodological / didactical approaches underlying the project / network / thematic seminar? - An education strategy for each one: the computerized tool offers an evolution to each one on his own rhythm and own capacities. Thence the software solution brings a monitoring tool for each student. - The benefit of open source software: (a new mode of teaching with help of computers). All teaching resources are free and can be diffused without any problem of licence. - Social constructivist mode of teaching: the student makes progress as much with his instruction as with the interactions with other peoples on the network. 8. What do you consider to be innovative about the project / network / thematic seminar? What is the European dimension of the project / network / thematic seminar? This project takes place in a non typical partnership. I could be seen as preposterous to associate Emmaüs with open source software development. But, if you look nearer, you will discover that the goals of this to worlds are very similar. Thence there's a love wedding to celebrate between open source software and social economy. 9. What is the dissemination potential of the outputs / products you have described above, beyond the institutions (and, if possible, countries) participating in the partnership? - Existing networks: Emmaüs France, Emmaüs Europe, Emmaüs international. - Pôle de compétences des logiciels libres, Espace 1er Degré - International network of Linux and open source software users - « fing » et du Ministère ( DT) Services infrastructures - . 2. Partnership composition and contribution (maximum 1 page; for networks maximum 2 pages) 1. Provide for each participating institution an approximate translation of its title into English, French or German and a brief description of its main types of activity. Training home for fellow companions - Emmaüs Forbach : reception center for people encountering integration and insertion problems. Emmaüs Forbach is a part of the national training home for follow companions which develops training programmes and development plans for all Emmaüs Groups (over 230) in France. Five different and complementary tools: - life and work community: 40 people - Social housing: 16 people - Insertions programme: 25 people - Guardian of waste sites: 13 people - Relaying home: 12 people And an association which can boast of having 140 voluntary workers who totalize 19.55 full-time jobs to provide the management National Education sector: composed of a series of schools led by the education inspector. Administrative and educational management of the schools; assessment of educational practice, especially concerning the use of TICE (computer helped working). The apprenticeships provided within the programmes the follow-through of schools projects including TICE, teacher's professional trainings. The LUGs (Linux Users Groups): These groups shared out in several cities work in the field of open source software. They develop which they share with the world community of users. Mount Temple Comprehensive School (Ireland): Providing academic and vocational education to school students aged 12 to 18 years old. The school has 850 full-time students. 2. What is the specific expertise provided by each participating institution? Training home of fellow companions: a computer network which reuses men and goods! Besides the implementation of a solution for the kind of people taken in by Emmaüs, SkoleLinux could enable the setting up of a reusing network for obsolete computer equipment (To start a network you need one single high performance computer , the others can be "recycled" machines) Education inspector: - Abilities in the field for evaluation and of the steady work of teaching teams. - Definition of the use of school intranet for the network work of pupils and teachers, taking-in of solutions in the school project which enable to work in networks and better apprenticeships. - Responsibilities within all the abilities linked to the use of open source software. The LUGs (Linux users Groups): insure the software creations engineering. Mount Temple Comprehensive School (Ireland): The school appears to be one of the few schools in the english-speaking world to have implemented the skolelinux thin-client server system throughout the school. We offer the possibility of dissemination of experiences to other schools. 3. Monitoring and evaluation (maximum ¼ page) 1. What methods will be used within the project / network / thematic seminar to monitor its progress towards the stated objectives? There're two or three seminar planed each year of the project. These meeting will be used to monitor the progress of the project. Moreover, we will build a managing and monitoring interface on the web site, which will offer to each partner a global vision of the progress of the project. 2. What methods will be used within the project / network / thematic seminar to evaluate its success in attaining the stated objectives? This evaluation will be led on two different but complementary levels - Follow-up of the teaching teams using SkoleLinux: o Evaluation of the SkoleLinux solution within the school scheme: contributions and problems brought in by the solution for apprenticeships. o Quizz o Technical evaluation of the solution: numbers do servicing operations, easy access to the solution for teachers, demand of software development. o Training evaluation - Economic study of the solution within its environment o Cost of the installation, of servicing assistance o Comparison of other software solutions given. o Viability: evolution, updating. 4. Other aspects (maximum ¼ page) Are there any other aspects of the proposed project / network activities / thematic seminar which you feel the Commission should take into account when assessing your pre-proposal? If so, please provide brief details. - Ethics of free software: copying non free software should not be accepted nor encouraged. SkoleLinux proposes a free and non-paying alternative which enables a large amount of people to get access to a quality tool. - Welcome of populations travelling throughout Europe and often native of countries from Eastern Europe: these are often the people welcomed by social working organisations, people for who a multi language tool like SkoleLinux would constitute an undeniable social profit. - This project is in line with sustainable development. 3. DECLARATION Declaration: This application is being submitted in the full knowledge of the appropriate authorities in the applicant institution and in each of the other participating institutions. _______________________________ Date: Signature of the Project / Network Coordinator or Legal Representative ----------------------- [1] Please note that projects submitted under action Grundtvig 4 .1- Grundtvig Thematic Seminars can have a maximum duration of 12 months.
