Covering of the travelling cost to a workshop writing a Minerva applications

The French foundation Emmaüs community works with giving homeless people a new start in society. The foundation has started a project with reuse of computers with Skolelinux in schools in France. the projects gives the homeless job training and experience and practical skills with developing and deploying information technology in the education. Through the work done with Skolelinux the Emmaüs Community draw advantages of the international network of schools, universities, and professionals in the information technology industry.

There is a vast interest in sharing the experiences with Skolelinux in many of the European countries to the advantage for whole of Europa and the world. We are applying for travelling expenses and accommodation from the Skolelinux project in <your country> to a workshop in Forbach in France. It would probably be 40 persons from different EU countries attending the workshop.

Project name: Skolelinux

Project summary: This project has 3 main goals:

 * Development of the computerized teaching tool: produce a system easy to install and easy to use
 * Experimentation and evaluation: install the system in various environments to evaluate the solution on pedagogical side, but also on the economical one.
 * Pooling of teaching resources: an evolutionary tool to translate and share teaching resources existing in the country of the partners.
Meeting dates: from 8th July to 15th July 2006

We believe it's important to do this project because it will help homeless, voluntaries, teachers and ICT professionals to get a broad knowledge and experience with free software and open content tailored for a teching environment. This project will share experiences and knowledge of practical use of free software and open content for use both in schools and at home.

Hopefully this will be a step in the direction of bridging the digital divide, and sharing knowledge between new groups that has social difficulties. It will also make it easier to get computer to schools by use reused equipment where the lifespan can be increased by using free software. This knowledge will have positive for the society as a whole.

On the individual level people get back to a normal life situation, or pupils can more easily get software tools and content with no licensing worries or requirement to by new computers when the proprietary software vendor upgrades their product, and cuts of the support for their older less computer power demanding software.
