This is the DebianDesktop Wiki, the homepage is here: http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-desktop

The Debian Desktop subproject is a group of volunteers who want to create the best possible operating system for home and corporate workstation use. Our motto is "Software that Just Works". In short, our goal is to bring Debian, GNU, and Linux to the mainstream world.

Existing Information

DebianDesktopTenets - This page lists the initial tenets and proposals set forth by Colin Walters on the Debian Desktop Webpage Page. It is provided here for individuals to add additional proposals and ideas.

?DebianDesktopProjectGoals - Help flesh these out!

Topics of interest (Where to help):

System Level Improvements:

  • ?DefaultPackages - Requirements for desktop-base

  • Boot - Make init scripts with unified and clear ouput or hide all boot up messages completely
  • BootProcessSpeedup - Make the boot times shorter

  • LinuxSpeedup - Specific tweaks to make the GUI crank!

  • HardwareAutodetection - Tools for Hardware detection and setup. See ?"LiveCD" for related info.

  • supermount, automount or hotplugging !["FDs"] and !["CDs"] (making sure apps behave nice and allways close files and connections when leaving directories (konqueror!))
  • DevicePermissions - Default capabilities groups for users on the system.

  • Have an automatic and intuitive to handle snapshot/backup solution set up by default at least for /home and /etc. Possible projects are...
  • ["XFreeCommon"] -- Common ["XFree86"] failsaife graphics (resolution, frequency, Desktop manager selector...) See "alternate-menu" options in ["GRUB"]'s menu.lst
  • DebianControlCenter -- Intended to build debconf-based tool to modularize the configuration of a desktop system in any way.

  • Use ["ALSA"] sound system, and configure it to use ["dmix"] plugin.

http://lists.debian.org/debian-desktop/2004/05/msg00023.html

miniwoody 1.2a has been released. A few bug fixes has been made, f.e. a after installation of german-environment users was not able to change their desktop behavior. This has been fixed within ver1.2a.

As [http://alioth.debian.org Alioth] seems to allow only uploads up to 2 MB right now, miniwoody development sites are available at ["berliOS"].
