Theme: LISP Machine
This theme is based on the CADR LISP Machine of the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. The machine played a role in the history of free software. Its commercialization in the year 1979 split the MIT hacker community and was one of the reasons AI lab programmer Richard M. Stallman started the GNU project. The complex wiring of the machine (the first machines were hand-assembled by Prof. Richard Greenblatt in the mid-1970s) may also symbolize the art of hacking that is valued by the Debian community. I photographed the machine during a visit in Boston on October 9th, 2010.
I wrote a presentation of the idea to the Debian Desktop list. http://lists.debian.org/debian-desktop/2010/11/msg00039.html

Blue Wallpaper 2048x1536 (4:3)
Blue Wallpaper 2560x2048 (5:4)
Blue Wallpaper 2560x1600 (16:9)
GDM 3
To make the blue theme consistent with the dark/golden colors of the CD label and cover I created the following version of the GDM3 Wallpaper. A pure blue version can also be downloaded.
GDM3 Login Background 2048x1536 (4:3)
GDM3 Login Background 2560x 2048 (5:4)
GDM3 Login Background 2560x1600 (16:9)
Desktop splash screen 420x293 px
Grub 2
CD label
CD cover
CDcover full res. (PDF, 58 MB)
Of course some of the elements (screenshots, quotes, release notes) have to be changed with the release of Debian 6.
Earlier versions
First version
Second version "Nucleus"
I developed this second version while working on the CD label. Basically it is the same picture as the first version that I took and transformed to a circle.
Source
The source files for each graphic will be published as soon as the work is done. Already available is the Source XCF-file (GIMP) for the CD label, which can be found here: http://lazybrowndog.net/debian/squeeze/spacemachine/_other/cd
This theme is based on some photographs I took. These photographs are also released under a free license. Copyright: Ulrich Hansen, Mainz, Germany 2010. Detail of the top of the machine. The post-it on the left has the name "Marvin" on it, which means Prof. Marvin Minsky, I suppose.
The detail of the wiring on the front. Note that this picture was taken without flash (in contrary to the other ones above). I used this picture for the wallpaper, the CD label and CD cover.
Another theme that is based on this one is SpaceMachine
