Theme: Lisp Machine
This theme is based on the CADR Lisp Machine of the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. The machine played a role in the history of free software. Its commercialization in the year 1979 split the MIT hacker community and was one of the reasons AI lab programmer Richard M. Stallman started the GNU project. The complex wiring of the machine (the first machines were hand-assembled by Prof. Richard Greenblatt in the mid-1970s) may also symbolize the art of hacking that is valued by the Debian community. I photographed the machine during a visit in Boston on October 9th, 2010.

Second Version "Nucleus"
I developed this second version while working on the CD label. Basically it is the same picture as the first version that I took and transformed to a circle.

Of course some of the elements (screenshots, quotes) have to be changed with the release of Debian 6.

If you like the general concept but prefer to have a more abstract artwork for debian: These colorful wallpapers are based on the same photograph of the LISP machine.
