How to behave in Mexico
You come to a country you have probably never been to - Some basic rules to make sure you don't make any grave mistakes.
Going out
Try to always hang out with at least one person who speaks Spanish
People in Mexico don't usually speak more than a couple of words in English. When you go out, try to always take with you a Spanish speaker, so he can assist you in basic things.
Using taxis
This point should be filled in when we have information of the local people
* Security
* Known taxi stand numbers
Hygene
In case you didn't follow the discussions on the lists: We strongly recommend you not to drink tap water. Tap water is clean (i.e. it is perfectly fine to use it for washing fruits, while washing your teeth, etc.)
Specifically in CVO, water is treated and supposed to be drinkable - The advise, still, is not to try your luck. Most stores will sell you bottled water for around 7 pesos per half a liter, 10 pesos a liter.
As for eating out: Established restaurants are usually safe for eating. You will surely be tempted, however, to eat on open air markets (such as the one ~200m down from the CVO top entrance). The best food ever is always found in open air markets... But hygene is not as high. Look at the different places around you, choose taking into account this important criteria. But all in all, you know your body - Again, up to you to choose.
Tipping
Whenever you go to a restaurant, a 10% tip is expected. Waiters invariably get very low wages, so tips are their main source of income. During Debconf, we suggest you give 5 to 7 pesos per person at each meal.
