DebConf 2027 bid for Portugal

Early draft for DebConf27 bid in Lisbon, Portugal.

Current work:

Accommodation

Our greatest current weakness is accommodation. Our method to address this is:

1. Acknowledge that summer is peak tourist season, accommodation is very expensive, if available. Flights are expensive and the weather is too hot. Consider other dates.

   • - We have had DebConf23 on September before due to weather reason in India. I think it may applies to Portugal as well. And hopefully September will be more afforable price for accommcations.

2. Identify potentially suitable accommodations in a ~10 minute walk radius from Técnico Lisboa (IST). (TODO: maryjane, others?)
3. Contact them with the following questions:
   • Would you be willing to rent out your entire accommodation venue to a conference to be held at Técnico Lisboa (IST) in 2027?
   • We understand Lisboa in the tourist season is heavily subscribed. Can you give insight to what date ranges would be available to rent your entire venue?
   • What is the capacity of your accommodation?

Focus on 3 star hotels. The current prices listed are NOT indicative of the final prices, these are peak season, last minute prices. It does give an indication of the rating (hostel vs 4 star hotel, for example).

There is an emerging FOSS community in Portugal, and the country is becoming more attractive for tech workers and remote workers (for better and for worse). Knowledge about Debian is nascent and growing.

There has been previous bids to host a DebConf in Lisbon, but the accommodation venues available have been found as not being suitable.

Portugal has excellent internet coverage, with the relatively late development after 1974 allowing to leap-frog to better technologies like fibre internet. Renewables cover at least 54% of electricity generation in Portugal. Portugal is impressive with innovative policy decisions and seem set to take full advantage of a connected world, with a well established remote working visa programme, decriminalised drug laws and the LGBTQI rights are now among the best in the world.

Our proposal is for DebConf27 to take place in Portugal because:

• Portugal is a very affordable European country.

• The organizing team has experience in the organization of international events and has attended previous ?DebConfs.

• The growing expat community expands on the already fabulous food of Portugal to offer an international gastronomy experience.
• Lisbon, Porto and Faro is served by International airports with connections to all continents.
• Venues are typically accessible as required by Portuguese Law.
• Beautiful, sunny weather.
• Fantastic nature with well designed walking (caminhas) and cycling infrastructure.

Venue

We are currently planning to organize DebConf27 in IST, Lisbon. We should write more about the venue here, and will sometime soon.

Food

• Several vegan and vegetarian options
• Traditional Portuguese food
• Good (inexpensive!) espresso coffee

Weather

• Pleasantly warm, dry and clear blue skies

Travel

• Most airlines have direct flights to Lisbon, Porto and/or Faro
• Several low cost companies also fly to Lisbon, Porto and Faro

Visa Policy

• Portugal in Schengen space
• Most attendees won't need a visa

Cheese and Wine Import

• Wine and beer allowed (and very much welcome)
• No food from outside the EU

Free Time

• Nearby beaches
• Night markets
• Bars and discos
• Music festivals near Lisbon in July and August
