I'm [http://www.hanskalabs.net David Paleino], I was born on March 13, 1987 in a small city in southern Italy, [wiki:WikiPedia:Mazara_del_Vallo Mazara del Vallo] (also [wiki:WikiTravel:Mazara_del_Vallo here]), and since the age of 6 I've fallen in love with computers. I've started using Microsoft DOS 6, Microsoft Windows 3.11 for Workgroups, and so on, until Microsoft Windows XP. In the meanwhile, I was also tasting the beauty of GNU/Linux systems (I started using Debian since version 2.0), but I always kept a "dual-boot" system (yes, I was kinda scared of losing my files). = My current FOSS work =
I'm starting to make a fork of [http://www.open-dent.com OpenDental], which would run on Linux-only, because I'll really need some management software in future. And no, I don't want any virtual machine, if I can do that. Main advantages of the work over the current software (which should run also on Linux):

 * native GUI -- !OpenDental currently uses Windows.Forms and own Resources which are compiled at build-time; the GUI will probably be GTK;
 * support for MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite -- as far as I can tell, !OpenDental only supports MySQL and Oracle;
 * any Windows-related bit will be removed -- that would result in faster, smaller, cleaner, neater code;
 * whatever comes to my mind.

However, I doubt I will be able to make these components from !OpenDental work:

 * Dr. Sparks' component '''!SparksToothChart'''. This is a great component IMHO, just have to find out how to port it on Linux... (it's GPL-2+'ed :) )

= Current work in Debian =
I currently maintain[http://snipr.com/qa_page some] Debian packages alone, or inside teams.

My main work is inside the[http://debian-med.alioth.debian.org Debian-Med] team: my main objective would be that of "watching" and integrating into Debian open-source software related to dentists. Unfortunately, there are only small (and just a few) projects which are dead upstream or not fully working :( . I'm therefore doing general contributions to the Debian-Med [:CustomDebian:CDD].

My work in Debian-Med (i.e. the packaging of[http://packages.qa.debian.org/e/emboss-explorer.html emboss-explorer]) lead me to join the[http://pkg-perl.alioth.debian.org Debian Perl team]. I've contributed some modules, done some bugfixing, and co-maintained some other modules. Now I left the Debian Perl team: I'm not a Perl hacker, and I'm not really interested in packaging modules I'll probably never use. Sorry guys ;)

You can see an overview of my work in Debian in the DDPO page (see "Useful links" below).

About me

Hi :)

I'm David Paleino, I was born on March 13, 1987 in a small city in southern Italy, Mazara del Vallo (also here), and since the age of 6 I've fallen in love with computers.

Since 2001 I'm a full-time GNU/Linux user, and started using Debian GNU/Linux after having tried Gentoo, RedHat, SuSE and some other distribution.

I'm currently studying Odontology (or Dentistry, call it whatever you like), at the University of Palermo. Unfortunately, there aren't (m)any open-source software for dentists. I'm currently at 5th grade, should become a dentist soon. Discounts (and less pain!) for FLOSS-developers ;)

I've also started contributing to Debian, "giving back to the community". They gave me freedom, why not helping them? ;-). I'm a Debian Developer since November 2009.
