'''Note that current bullseye kernels a broken on Xen instance types using Enhanced Networking'''

Instance families using Enhanced Networking use the ixgbevf network driver, which is not functional on Amazon EC2 in the current Bullseye and upstream kernel releases. See [[https://bugs.debian.org/1006346|Bug #1006346]] for details. Until this is fixed, you will need to either use older AMIs or use instance types that do not use the ixgbevf driver. Either older generation Xen instance types (c3, m3, etc.) using the Xen netfront driver or newer Nitro instance types (c5, m5, etc) using the ENA driver will work. This issue only impacts amd64 instances, as arm64 instances are all Nitro based.

Debian Bullseye on Amazon EC2

SSH username

SSH to Debian instances as user admin using your SSH key, and then sudo -i to gain root access.

Status

The initial publication of official Debian 11 (bullseye) AMIs for Amazon EC2 took place on 15 August 2021. The AMIs are available for both arm64 and amd64 (x86_64) instance types in all public regions except those in in China. China and US GovCloud regional availability is planned for the future.

The AMIs are owned by AWS account ID 136693071363 and can be launched via the AWS Marketplace or directly using the AMI IDs listed below.

The current AMI names are:

  • debian-11-amd64-20220503-998
  • debian-11-arm64-20220503-998

AMI IDs can be obtained via Public Parameters in the AWS Systems Manager Parameter Store in the /aws/service/debian/ namespace.

The current region-specific AMI IDs are:
