Debian Installer Jessie

This page is used for my rants on needed improvements to the Debian installer, and also to support projects like Debian LTS.

This installer has still a weak implementation of EFI, and troubleshooting is needed to install in newer firmware. I recently edited GrubEFIReinstall to add links to the pages of the author of several utilities that can help with installing on UEFI laptops or motherboards. I think that Debian should create an installer that boots directly into Secure Boot. It is a tough task, but the ALT Linux team in Russia created a rescue CD that boots directly in Secure Boot, and if they can do it, Debian should be able to replicate it. This will counter corporate efforts to induce manufacturers to close their products to anything other than those with whom they have made financial arrangements, we all know who they are. A more widespread adoption of free software would ensue.

The Debian LTS project

Spearheaded by Freexian, a company owned by Raphael Herzog, long time Debian developer, and co-author of the Debian reference book, which is in the repositories too. The project aims to consolidate Debian in the server market, as we all know that sysadmins hate upgrades, reboots, bugs, etc. That is a project that I like to help too, yes I HATE closed source and corporate domination.

Feedback for the installer

The following is what the Debian installer team has to say, please chip in and help. "We do need your help to find bugs and further improve the installer, so please try it. Installer CDs, other media and everything else you will need are available at our web site."

Thanks

The Debian Installer team thanks everybody who has contributed to this release.
