Making the space safe
- Header on top of this page and of the various announces:
Attending the Bug Squashing Party in Paris required reading and respecting our Code of Conduct.
We are committed to providing a friendly, safe and welcoming environment for all, regardless of level of experience, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, personal appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, age, religion, nationality, or other similar personal characteristic. Our code of conduct sets the standards in terms of behaviour for the whole event, including communication (public and private) in before, while and after. If you feel you have been or are being harassed or made uncomfortable by a an attendee, please contact any member of the Moderation Team immediately. Whether you are an experienced contributor or a newcomer, we care about making this event a safe space for you.
- Be welcoming, friendly, and patient.
- Be considerate. Your work will be used by other people, and you in turn will depend on the work of others. Any decision you take will affect users and other contributors, and you should take those consequences into account when making decisions. Remember that we're a world-wide community, so you might not be communicating in someone else's primary language.
- Be respectful. Not all of us will agree all the time, but disagreement is no excuse for poor behavior and poor manners. We might all experience some frustration now and then, but we cannot allow that frustration to turn into a personal attack. It's important to remember that a community where people feel uncomfortable or threatened is not a productive one. Members of the Debian community should be respectful when dealing with other members as well as with people outside the Debian community.
- Be careful in the words that you choose. Be kind to others. Do not insult or put down other participants. Harassment and other exclusionary behavior aren't acceptable. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Violent threats or language directed against another person.
- Sexist, racist, or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language.
- Exhibiting sexually explicit or violent speak or material.
- Publishing (or threatening to publish) other people's personally identifying information ("doxing").
- Recording, photographing or filming other persons without their consent. Seek consent before recording. Also ask people who may be seen or heard in the background. Similarly, don't publish private communication without asking first, except if the communication was unwanted (harrassment, threats etc). In doubt, you can ask us before publishing something.
- Personal insults, especially those using racist or sexist terms.
- Unwelcome sexual attention.
- Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior.
- Repeated harassment of others. In general, if someone asks you to stop, then stop.
- Private harassment is also unacceptable. No matter who you are, if you feel you have been or are being harassed or made uncomfortable by a community member, please contact a member of the moderation team.
- When we disagree, try to understand why. Disagreements, both social and technical, happen all the time and Debian no exception. It is important that we resolve disagreements and differing views constructively. Remember that we're different. The strength of Debian comes from its varied community, people from a wide range of backgrounds. Different people have different perspectives on issues. Being unable to understand why someone holds a viewpoint doesn't mean that they're wrong. Don't forget that it is human to err and blaming each other doesn't get us anywhere. Instead, please consider offering your help in order to resolve issues and to help learn from mistakes.
- We will exclude you from the event if you insult, demean or harass anyone. That is not welcome behaviour. We interpret the term “harassment” as including the definition in the Citizen Code of Conduct; if you have any lack of clarity about what might be included in that concept, please read their definition. In particular, we don’t tolerate behavior that excludes people in socially marginalized groups.
- TBD: print it
- Moderation team
- TBD: members
- TBD: contact info
- TBD: announce all this at least once a day
Misc
- ACTION: intrigeri asks access to the Mozilla space for orga team + helpers on Friday night, to set things up [WIP: waiting for answer]
- ACTION: Geb investigates how door and bell will be managed
- TBD: Check that we don't forget anything that's on:
- ACTION: Geb investigates to find a easy way for people to register (account creation on this wiki currently requires emailing the admins)
Food
We want to provide a lunch on both days. It shall be vegan to simplify handling diverse diet. The attendees table has a column for other diet desires and needs.
- ACTION: intrigeri asks jcristau a quote from Mozilla's usual caterer, making it clear that we want vegan [WIP]
Accommodation
- TBD: call for solidarity hosting
- TBD: match hosting requests with offers
- TBD: (if we have enough budget) book remaining needed hosting in a hostel, Airbnb or whatnot
Finances
- ACTION: intrigeri starts looking for sponsorship [WIP]
- ACTION: intrigeri asks the DPL [WIP]
- ACTION: intrigeri thinks of other potential sponsors
TBD: ensure we can sponsor at least travel for potential new contributors who need it (one doesn't get a diverse set of attendees if only only-timers get support)
- TBD: how to manage travel sponsorship requests? (assuming we have a budget for that)
- make it clear there's a budget for that in the various announcements
- receive and store requests, and at some point make a call
- manage reimbursements
- ACTION: intrigeri includes food in the support budget we're gonna ask to potential sponsors
Optimizing for a broader public
(i.e. not only Debian developers)
Reach out to, and properly welcome, people who can contribute to the quality assurance effort, with their pre-existing skills, in other ways than fixing bugs and uploading packages. E.g.
- testing the upcoming version and providing feedback; evaluating the state of translations and the support of accessibility technologies could be interesting focuses;
- triaging release blocking bugs (reproducing them, assessing their severity, pointing the relevant people to them);
- providing feedback about "the top N things I dislike the most in the current Debian release, that I very much hope will be fixed in the next one";
- collecting data relevant to the release notes.
Make it real once we're there
There will be people committing to host a station, i.e. holding some physical space dedicated to people with a given set of skills, and making it welcoming and productive.
- ACTION: intrigeri discusses with Taka how the station about graphics and design can be organized [WIP]
- ACTION: intrigeri discusses with Hypra how the focus on accessibility technologies/usecases can be organized [WIP]
Make it clear in our communication
- ACTION: intrigeri writes a few lines about each station, and a sentence that says there might be more stations if we find hosts, that we can include in our announcements etc.
- users testing/feedback, with a specific interest in accessibility technologies (intrigeri, jvoisin, Hypra)
- bug triaging (Solveig, kibi)
- design and graphics (to be confirmed)
Invites
TBD:
- people who could give a hand organizing (e.g. spreading the word and themselves inviting cool people)
- people we want to see there
Publicity
Announcement
- ACTION: intrigeri drafts announcement text (early Feb)
- make it clear that there will be a team ready to deal with problems (safe space)
- include a placeholder about sponsorship, that we'll update when it's time to publish the announcement, depending on the progress we made on fundraising
- the space is accessible to wheelchairs, but we have organized no translation into the sign language so far
ACTION: Geb will coordinate communication & publicity, and start to spread the word around Feb 10-12
We have a pad that's meant to list people & websites we want to send the announcement to. It's kept private as it contains social network information some of us prefer not to disclose publicly.
