Introduzione

• Debian GNU/Linux viene distribuita liberamente su internet. Debian è nota per essere più difficile da installare rispetto ad altre distribuzioni Linux. Questo oramai non è più vero. Altri sottolineano che l'installazione è qualcosa che tipicamente capita solo una volta nella vita di un sistema Debian. Una volta fatta l'installazione iniziale la manutenzione e gli upgrade successivi non necessitano di reinstallazioni. E' possibile aggiornare sia l'intero sistema sia singoli pacchetti senza riavviare il sistema. Other than kernel or hardware upgrades, there are few if any routine maintenance reasons to take down a Debian system.

• The Debian install is also particularly versatile. It's possible to install from CDROM/DVD/Blueray disk, over a network, bootstrapped from within another Linux distribution, or from MS Windows system.

Ottenere Debian

Scaricare e masterizzare l'intero set di CD/DVD

Il maggior vantaggio di scaricare il file .iso e masterizzarlo è di non dover aspettare che arrivino i CD. L'intero set di CD può essere scaricato in formato .iso da:

Se vuoi scaricare una o più immagini CD complete da 650 MB utilizza jigdo che divide il carico su vari server Debian, alleggerendoli e dunque permettendo un download più veloce.

Sebbene Debian consista di oltre 20 CD (o 3 DVD), occorre solo il primo CD per installare Debian. Gli altri CD sono opzionali ed includono programmi extra che possono essere scaricati individualmente durante l'installazione o successivamente.

Scaricare e masterizzare il CD per l'installazione via rete

For folks with broadband Internet access, it's quite rare to download a full set of 650 MB iso images to install Debian. Instead, it's most common to just use a minimal network install CD instead. This network install iso (called "netinst") contains just enough packages to install a very basic Debian system. During the install procedure, it downloads the rest from the Internet as needed. A netinst iso image is around 180 MB. Also available is the so-called "businesscard" image that is around 40 MB.

There is also the possibility to boot from another computer without needing to use CD/floppy media at all. All you need is a TFTPD and a DHCPD running on the install-from computer. This is called installing via "netboot".
