With Debian squeeze you have the choice between "kde-full" and "kde-standard" which appears to be about half the size. Also "xserver-xorg" is a bit smaller than "xorg". Running "apt-get install xserver-xorg kdm kde-standard" appears to take less than 1G of disk space
