The current DebianStable distribution was developed under the code name Etch. It was released on Apr 8th 2007 as Debian GNU/Linux 4.0, prior to which it was the DebianTesting distribution.

24 Jul 2006 : Announcement of Upcoming Release (press release).
08 Apr 2007 : Initial released : 4.0r0 (press release).
17 Aug 2007 : Updated (4.0r1) (preparation; press release).
27 Dec 2007 : Updated (4.0r2) (preparation; press release).
17 Feb 2008 : Updated (4.0r3) (preparation; press release).

S1 2008 : planned : Etch and a half Add support for new hardware, at Etch mid life-cycle
S2 2008 : planned : Etch becomes old-stable. That's, when the next stable (lenny) should be released
S2 2009 : planned : End of security updates / End of life. i.e one year after the next stable distribution has been released.

Architectures
Etch is officially supported on the following architectures : alpha, amd64, arm, hppa, i386, ia64, m68k, mips, mipsel, powerpc, s390, sparc. (see Etch's release page, release architecture criteria, and architecture re-qualification status).

Secure/Signed repositories (SecureApt).
Graphical Installer (DebianInstaller/GUI).
Debian-Installer supports 58 languages (i.e 18 new ones ; map)
- UTF-8 enabled by default.
